Following images taken on 17 June 2019 by Sandy Menasha, Vegetable Specialist Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, document that early blight can occur in high tunnel tomatoes. The causal fungus can also cause symptoms on stems and fruit.īelow: Symptoms of early blight on fruit calyx and stem.īelow: One reason tomatoes are grown in high tunnels is to avoid diseases like early blight that are caused by pathogens that need leaves to be wet for several hours in order to infect. ![]() Early blight first appears as small dark spots on older foliage located close to ground level. Both these fungi can also affect other members of the nightshade crop family, including potatoes, peppers, and eggplant. Early blight can affect seedlings but is generally. Early blight on tomatoes is identified by yellow halos around the dark leaf spots and by an absence of stem lesions and fruit damage. tomatophila is not found in the region, early blight is usually caused by A. This is especially important for bacterial pathogens. Power wash dirt off tomato stakes and then disinfect before re-using. Diseases starting on seedlings are difficult to manage. Sources of the pathogen are infested seed, debris from infected plants left in or on the soil (where it can survive at least 1 year), and spores from other affected plants dispersed typically short distances by wind, water, insects, or animals.īelow: Early blight symptoms first appear on older leaves near the base of the plant.īelow: Tomato leaves infected with early blight.īelow: Note the ‘target’ appearance of concentric rings. Early blight is a fungal disease, Alternaria sp., that occurs on tomatoes throughout North America. Starting before symptoms develop is important to successful management of bacterial diseases. ![]() Young seedlings can be killed by stem lesions developing at their base. The causal fungal pathogen also produces symptoms on stems and fruit. Spots first appear on older leaves near the base of the plant. The main symptom of early blight is round leaf spots with a characteristic target appearance due to the dark concentric rings that develop in most spots. ![]()

Superhuman and Twobird have desktop apps that feel like web apps in a single dedicated window. Gmail, for example, only runs in the browser. It's nice to see in a world where desktop software sometimes feels like an afterthought to web and mobile apps. The desktop applications, notably, feel like Mac and Windows apps, with interfaces that respect the design conventions of those operating systems. I installed and tested Canary on all four platforms for this review. Which Platforms Does Canary Run On?Ĭanary is available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. If that context, Canary looks affordable-particularly when you consider that the free version offers enough features for most people. Superhuman, a productivity-focused email tool, starts at a whopping $30 per month and doesn't even include any AI-writing assistance. Outlook starts at $6.99 per person per month as part of Microsoft 365. On the paid side there's Microsoft's Outlook, which will eventually have integrated AI features similar to Canary. There are entirely free email clients-Windows and macOS both come with capable ones, and open-source applications like Thunderbird are also freely available, as are capable free apps like Twobird. Paid subscriptions start at $20 per year for Pro, which offers additional features, including a built-in calendar, pinned emails, end-to-end encryption, read receipts, and custom snooze times.Īs email clients go, Canary Mail Pro is a good deal, especially given its AI capabilities, which I'll explore more in a moment. There's no need to sign up for an account to use the service-you simply download one of the apps and connect your email accounts. Still, among email clients and assistants, it's one of the better apps you'll find. Canary also offers read receipts, great keyboard shortcuts, and the ability to snooze emails, but the occasional bugs keep it from being perfect. It promises to compose emails for you, including replies to incoming messages, and lives up to this promise via a partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Encryption is still there, but in 2023, Canary, like many productivity apps, is all about artificial intelligence (AI). A year ago the app branded itself entirely as a privacy-centric email client, with support for encrypted emails. The team behind Canary is clearly also wondering, as it has pivoted a few times. You might be wondering what exactly an email client needs to offer to justify that kind of outlay. Canary Mail is an email client backed by $3.4 million in venture capital. ![]() ![]() ![]() Having ridden both bikes, we can confirm the carbon version is sexier, lighter, stiffer and every other accolade that it has been given. There are plenty of tests out there on this bikes big brother, the Session 9, the full carbon version has had its praises sung many times, but if you don’t have a pile of cash under the bed it is a little rich. However, if you prefer a longer bike you might want to be very careful when it comes to sizing, the best bet is to get a test ride on one, although that will probaly result in you buying it… It was great through the tight twisty stuff too. In terms of feel the cockpit the Session 88 can be a little short to some, we had the medium on test and being a fan of smaller bikes felt right at home. It’s worth noting we ran the standard tubes inside and didn’t get a single puncture in 4 months, running pressues of 26 in the front and 28psi in the rear… They also had a solid wear pattern, there was no drastic degradation and there is still plenty of life left in them, even after such a long test. The big surprise were the G4 Team Issue tyres, similar in shape to the very popular Maxxis Minion Fronts they offer excellent grip in a wide range of conditions. The saddle and seat post do a good job and the 780mm wide handlebars are excellent as are the grips. The Bontrager components often get a bad rap we’re not sure why as Bontrager have been developing them for years and they are as solid as they come. The 180mm rotor on the back end is woefully under equipped for very steep tracks, the Avid rotor is also rather thin and flimsy, a beefier set of floating rotors would be a solid upgrade. The 40 is a nice fork, and it’s a relatively easy fix, but these small niggles really shouldn’t be happening on a fork like this. It’s worth mentioning the bad stuff, the cover slipped on the Fox 40’s spring, as it always seems too. Don’t get us wrong, you won’t buy this bike and be transformed into Brook MacDonald, but you might ride it and find yourself improve and get noticeably quicker on sections that may have previously held you back. In the steeps of Pila it got up to speed so quickly and stayed there that you almost felt like you were riding way above your natural level for longer than you would dream possible. It’s forgiving too, once we had tuned the suspension and increased the pressure in the Boost Valve in the Fox Rear Shock slightly it felt so planted it was hard to get out of your comfort zone. For sure, there are bikes out there that outperform it in certain conditions, but if you want a DH rig that can handle anything you throw at it with aplomb then the Session 88 comes pretty close. The Session 88 is a very solid sled, make no mistake, it’s so versatile and comfortable in such a wide range of conditions it is hard to think of a better all round downhill bike. As is the need to let it all hang out when the going gets rough and the harsh hits are more common. Having the ability to tune the suspension for more pop and sit the head angle up a little to enable a snappier feel is important. Not all racetracks are the same the difference between Pietermaritzburg and Val Di Sole for instance is stark! Indeed on our trip we took in the crazy steeps of Pila to the more pedally trails of Livigno. The Mino link plays an important role in the adjustability of this rig, which is something Trek are very keen on. The finish that Trek has put on the frame in terms of paintwork is really impressive, and the entire bike stood up to the abuse very well. When it came to cleaning the bike up and handing it back I couldn’t believe how “new” it looked. During our two-week road trip it was subjected to over 120,000 feet of harsh rocky tracks. From local DH trails to the Italian Alps we put plenty of vertical descent on the bike. We had the Session for most of the summer, and spent a lot of time on the bike ensuring we put it through its paces in every conceivable situation. But there are few midlife equivalents, the notable exception being a scene in Allison Pearson’s 2017 novel How Hard Can It Be? where her 49-year-old heroine is caught out during a high-powered work event and ends up barricaded in the loo, bleeding all over the hotel’s fancy towels. Today younger women are increasingly upfront about their cycles, thanks to activist campaigns, taboo-busting books and such groundbreaking television moments as the period sex scene in Michaela Coel’s award-winning drama I May Destroy You. (Menopause is defined as the point of not having menstruated for a year.) Given about 13 million British women are either peri- or postmenopausal, with some trans and non-binary people on similar journeys, the silence seems oddly deafening. All at a time when many assumed their periods would be politely fading away. But it takes a different level of courage to talk publicly about wearing three pairs of knickers – just in case, or to cope with what the Canadian gynaecologist and author of The Menopause Manifesto Dr Jen Gunter calls a “supersoaker event” – the kind of bleeding that can flood through clothes, defeat even a combination of super-plus tampons and maternity towels, and leave women needing iron supplements or in some cases stop them leaving the house. Michelle Obama has spoken frankly about coping with hot flushes in the White House, and the Countess of Wessex recently confessed to having suffered menopausal brain fog. There must be women round the world just pretending they need to dash off for some other reason.” But because menstrual blood is gross in our society, there’s no conversation about it. “You can talk about hot flushes, make a joke about it. “If you have a bunch of 12-year-olds in the car, you can’t say: ‘Sorry chaps, I’m just bleeding heavily today,’” says Pickett, a 48-year-old breastfeeding counsellor and author of The Breast Book, who also happens to be among the one in five British women who suffer from heavy periods in the run-up to menopause (or perimenopause). Yet she rarely hears anyone talk about the reason so many older women secretly go to all this trouble why they’ve started to stick to black trousers, give up the sports they loved, or plan days out – especially with children – meticulously. She will often take an emergency change of clothes when she goes out, and if giving a lecture for work, has to ensure it is no longer than half an hour. ![]() If Emma Pickett needs to make a long journey, she checks her calendar very carefully. ![]() ![]() The prognostic value of tip-to-apex distance (TAD index) in intertrochanteric fractures fixed by dynamic hip screw.
